Cleaning and the offset

This works the same on iPhone, Android and the web. A few labels differ, and this page says where.

Why a clean moves the numbers

The numbers on a collar mean something only against where the burrs touch. Take the burrs out and put them back, and the collar can sit differently against that point, so the same number can be a different grind.

The difference is the offset: how many clicks finer or coarser you now have to dial to get the grind a number gave you before the clean. Until you measure it, ShotPulled does not assume the collar stayed put: “nobody checked” and “checked, and nothing moved” are different facts.

Log the clean

  1. Open Equipment and tap the grinder.
  2. In its Maintenance section, tap Log beside Burr clean when it is listed as due or next, or tap Log a task and pick Burr clean under What did you do?.
  3. Set the Date if it was not today.
  4. Leave The burrs came out on if you took them out. Turn it off for a brush through that left the burrs in place: then nothing about your numbers changes.
  5. If you counted the clicks as you put it back together, turn on I counted the clicks as I reassembled it, type the Clicks, and pick Finer or Coarser. The button waits until you pick a direction, because a count means nothing without one. If you did not count, leave it off and measure later.
  6. Tap Log burr clean.

Replacing the burrs works the same way, with The new burrs are seated in place of The burrs came out.

How to clean the burrs is in your model’s guide on its gear page, for example the Baratza Encore ESP’s. The same guide opens from the task in the app.

Not measured

A clean logged with the burrs out and no count leaves the offset not measured. The grinder’s Maintenance section then leads with Offset not measured and the date of the clean. So does the Cockpit’s Maintenance row.

Recipes locked before the clean keep showing the number you logged, with a warning under it: cleaned since · offset unmeasured. Nothing is blocked: you can still log shots and lock recipes. Recipes locked after the clean need no correction.

Measure it

Under Offset not measured, tap Measure it (on Android, Measure). Measure the offset opens with two ways to do it.

A reference pull

Tap Reference pull at the top of the sheet if it is not already picked. The app picks the last recipe you locked on this grinder before the clean, and shows it under Pull this, at the number as written: its grind number, dose, yield and time.

  1. Pull that recipe at that exact number, with the same dose and basket.
  2. If you logged the shot, the sheet reads it in and says which pull it used. If several pulls qualify, pick the one you mean. You can also type the yield and time of a pull you did not log.
  3. The sheet compares your flow with the recipe’s, in g/s.

Within 0.05g/s of the recipe, it says Unchanged and the button reads Record as unchanged. That is saved as a measurement: the collar did not move.

Faster or slower, it says which way the collar moved. How many clicks is worked out from your own shots on this grinder, and the sheet says how many shots it used. With too few shots at different settings, or shots too scattered to read, it gives the direction only and cannot save a number. Then count the clicks instead, or dial by taste and come back to it.

If your dose is more than 0.3g off the recipe’s, the sheet says so. On iPhone and the web it also flags a pull of a different coffee.

Tap Save offset.

If no recipe was locked on this grinder before the clean, there is nothing to pull against, and the sheet offers only the count.

A hand count

Pick the count (Counted on iPhone, I counted the clicks on Android and the web), type the Clicks and pick Finer or Coarser. A count of zero is not accepted: to record that nothing moved, use a reference pull.

What changes after you measure

Recipes locked before the clean show the corrected number first, with what you logged under it, for example logged as 1.1.3 · 2 clicks finer. Dial the number on top. Nothing you logged is rewritten, and your shots keep the numbers they were pulled at.

A recipe reads through every clean since it was locked. If any one of them is not measured, the total cannot be known, so the recipe shows its logged number and a warning such as 2 cleans since · 1 unmeasured. The app measures the most recent clean, so measure each one before the next. A recipe stuck behind an unmeasured clean is fixed by dialing in again and re-locking it.

Two cleans, one pull

A reference pull measures everything that moved since its recipe was locked. If you cleaned twice without measuring in between, the app still picks the last recipe locked before the latest clean. If that recipe was locked between the two cleans, the pull measures the latest clean alone. If it was locked before both, the pull measures the two cleans together, and the app saves it as covering both.

Recipes locked before both cleans then read the measured total. A recipe locked between the two needs only the part after its lock, and the app knows that part only if the first clean was measured on its own, for example by counting the clicks when you put the burrs back. Then it reads the pull minus that count. Otherwise it keeps its logged number and the warning, because part of what the pull measured happened before that recipe was locked.

The sheet’s line, such as 2 locked recipes will read through this, counts only the recipes this measurement completes. A recipe stuck behind an earlier clean that nobody measured, and that the pull does not cover, is not in the count.

A hand count always measures the one clean you counted, and no other.
