Locked recipes
This works on iPhone, Android and the web. Where the buttons differ, this page says so.
What a locked recipe is
A locked recipe is one shot’s grind setting, dose, yield and time, kept as the reference the Cockpit dials against.
A recipe belongs to one setup: one coffee, one grinder, one machine (and its program, if you used one), and one drink. The drink, straight or milk, is the one you picked when you logged the shot, so the app does not ask again. A straight recipe and a milk recipe sit side by side on the same setup, and neither replaces the other.
A shot can be locked only if it has a dose, a yield and a time. Without one of them, the button is grayed out and says which is missing, for example This shot has no yield, and a recipe needs one.
Lock a shot
From any shot:
- On iPhone and Android, open the shot from History and tap Lock as reference recipe. A shot you have not tasted opens its tasting instead: taste it first.
- On the web, a shot’s reading on the Cockpit has Lock as reference, and each shot in History has a lock button.
When you rate a shot four or five stars in its tasting, the app offers the lock there too, with Lock. On iPhone and the web it also offers it for a shot you marked as a favorite or as your best brew on the bag.
From a coffee: on iPhone and the web, open the coffee on Beans and tap Lock a shot. It lists the bag’s recent shots that have all three numbers, and each one locks with a tap.
On iPhone, the row then reads Locked as this bag’s reference.
What a new lock replaces
If the setup already has a locked recipe for that drink, a new lock replaces it. The app tells you before it does anything:
- On iPhone, the row reads Lock this shot instead. On the web the button reads Lock this one instead.
- On iPhone and the web, tapping it opens Overwrite the locked recipe?. It puts the two side by side (grind, dose, yield and time, the locked recipe against this shot) and counts how many of the four change. Tap Overwrite to replace it, or Keep the current one to leave it.
- On Android, the row keeps reading Lock as reference recipe, and the sheet that opens is Replace the locked recipe?, with the current recipe’s numbers. Replace it replaces it. Keep the current one closes the sheet: the locked recipe stays as it was, and the shot stays logged but is not locked.
The old numbers are not kept and cannot be brought back. The shots pulled against them stay in your history. A lock also copies where the machine’s settings stood for the new shot.
Where your recipes are
On iPhone and Android, the Cockpit has a Locked recipes section for the coffee in use, with All recipes to see every one. Settings has Locked recipes too.
On the web, Recipes is in the menu. Filter it by coffee, grinder or machine. Reproduce on a recipe makes its coffee, grinder and machine the ones in use, so the Cockpit dials against it. The Cockpit also shows the Locked reference for the setup in use, with View in Recipes.
After a burr clean
Taking the burrs out can move what each number on the collar means. A recipe locked before the clean then shows its grind with a warning until the shift is measured, and the corrected number once it is. See Cleaning and the offset.
If you have cleaned the grinder, measure the offset before you re-lock. The measurement pulls against the last recipe locked before the clean, and re-locking that setup turns it into a recipe from after the clean.
