Before you start

Tools
back flush cap (blind basket, supplied), portafilter
Supplies
espresso machine cleaning detergent (a small amount; any espresso cleaning detergent sold locally)

Steps

  1. Do the plain-water backflush first, then put a small amount of espresso machine detergent in the blind basket.

    From the manual: “Every week, after backflushing, add a small amount of espresso cleaning detergent to the blind basket.”

  2. Dissolve the detergent with hot water and lock the portafilter into the group.

    From the manual: “Dissolve the detergent in hot water and insert the portafilter into the group head.”

  3. Lift the brew lever, then lower it again after about 10 seconds.

    From the manual: “Turn the brew lever on and off again after about 10 seconds.”

  4. Repeat that on/off cycle several times. Repeat several times

  5. Take the portafilter out and empty the detergent from the basket.

    From the manual: “Empty the basket of the detergent”

  6. Backflush with plain water, as in the daily backflush, until no detergent residue is left in the group.

    From the manual: “backflush using water only as above until the group is thoroughly cleansed of detergent residue.”
