Replace the group gasket and shower screens: Lucca A53 Direct Drive and Lucca A53 Direct Mini

Before you start

Tools
8 mm wrench (or the tool from the accessory box), pick or flathead screwdriver, microfiber towel, portafilter
Supplies
replacement group gasket and screen (LUCCA A53 / Vivaldi group); Molykote or other food-grade lubricant (thin layer on the new gasket); backflush detergent (1/2 teaspoon in hot water, for soaking the dispersion plate), optional

Steps

  1. Start with a full detergent backflush (see the backflush guide).

  2. Undo the screw inside the group head with the wrench.

    From the manual: “With your wrench, loosen the screw inside the grouphead.”

  3. Let the two screens and the dispersion plate drop out of the group.

    From the manual: “the two screens and plate should easily come out of the group head”

  4. If the plate is caked with coffee, soak it 15 minutes in hot water with 1/2 teaspoon of backflush detergent, then wipe it. Optional Only when: heavy coffee residue on the dispersion plate

  5. Lever the old gasket out of the group with a pick or flathead screwdriver.

    From the manual: “Using a pick or flathead screwdriver, pry the gasket out from inside the grouphead.”

  6. Wipe the remaining coffee residue out of the group with a small towel.

    From the manual: “wipe away any remaining coffee residue from inside the group head”

  7. Coat the outside of the new gasket thinly with the lubricant.

    From the manual: “Apply a thin layer of the lubricant to the exterior of your new gasket.”

  8. Slide the new gasket into place round the rim of the group.

    From the manual: “Slide the gasket back around the rim of the group head.”

  9. Optionally lock in the portafilter to guide the gasket and press it firmly home. Optional

  10. Refit the dispersion plate and the screens, smallest screen at the bottom.

    From the manual: “Replace the dispersion plate and screens (the smallest screen is on the bottom)”

  11. Screw the dispersion screw back in until hand tight.

    From the manual: “insert the dispersion screw until it is hand tight”

  12. Lock the portafilter back into the group.

    From the manual: “Insert the portafilter back into your group head”
