Steps

  1. Unplug the machine, let it cool fully, then drain the water from the boiler.

  2. Undo the nuts above the piston using two 14 mm open-end wrenches.

    From the manual: “Using two 14mm open-end wrenches, unscrew the nuts above the piston.”

  3. Pull out the two lever pins and put them somewhere safe.

    From the manual: “Remove the two pins that hold the lever in place (keep them safe).”

  4. Lift the lever off and ease the machine over onto its side.

    From the manual: “Remove the lever and gently tilt the machine on its side.”

  5. Hook out the shower-screen gasket.

    From the manual: “Using a hook, remove the shower screen gasket.”

  6. Take out the shower screen, then the piston.

  7. Hook the two piston seals off the piston so it can be cleaned.

  8. Unbolt the group head and lift off the piston body.

  9. Unscrew the copper pipe and its plastic fitting.

  10. Scrub the seals and the piston-body interior using soapy water and a toothbrush.

    From the manual: “Clean all seals and the inside of the piston body with soapy water and a toothbrush.”

  11. Refit the piston seals, or new ones if worn, with the wide side facing outward.

  12. Screw the plastic tip and the copper tube back on.

  13. Grease the piston and the inside of the body with food-grade grease.

    From the manual: “Apply food-grade grease to the piston and body.”

  14. Slide the piston back into the body, keeping it aligned.

    From the manual: “Reinsert the piston into the body, align correctly.”

  15. Seat the shower-screen gasket and push the shower screen in.

    From the manual: “Place the shower screen seal and insert the shower screen.”

  16. Put the piston body back on the boiler and tighten its bolts.

    From the manual: “Replace the piston body onto the boiler, tighten the bolts.”

  17. Refit the lever with its pins and nuts.

    From the manual: “Reattach the lever, pins, and nuts.”

  18. Set the lever height so the piston cannot reach the shower screen.

    From the manual: “Adjust the lever height to prevent the piston from touching the shower screen.”
