Before you start

Applies when
electric burr grinder (flat or conical, hopper or single-dose) whose maker allows grinder cleaning tablets but gives no dose or procedure; not a grinder built into a super-automatic machine
Tools
container to catch and discard the output
Supplies
grinder cleaning tablets (Urnex Grindz or equivalent) (one 35 g packet, or one 35-40 g jar cap for an espresso grinder); coffee beans for purging (about 70 g, to be thrown away)

Steps

  1. Grind out or remove every coffee bean so the grinder is empty.

  2. Move the grind setting to a medium position.

  3. Pour one 35 g packet of tablets into the empty grinder.

    From the manual: “Add 1 packet (35 g) of grinder cleaner tablets into empty grinder.”

  4. Grind all of it through at the medium setting and throw the output away.

    From the manual: “Grind through on medium setting and discard.”

  5. Grind about 70 g of coffee beans to purge the tablet residue, throw that away too, then go back to your usual grind setting. Repeat until no yellow specks of tablet show in the grounds
