Strip down, clean or change the burrs: Varia VS3 Gen 2

Before you start

Tools
service tool (supplied parts kit), silicone bellows (supplied), cleaning brush (supplied)
Supplies
replacement burr set (burr change only) (Varia VS3 38 mm conical burr set), optional

Warnings

Steps

  1. Switch the empty grinder on and pump the silicone bellows to blow out loose coffee.

  2. Disconnect the power supply.

  3. Take the tools out of the supplied parts bag.

  4. Unscrew the hopper anticlockwise and set it aside.

  5. Lift off the adjustment collar.

  6. Carefully take out the small ring bearing (A).

  7. Pull the outer burr (B) gently up and out.

  8. Loosen the set nut (C) on the inner burr by turning the tool clockwise.

  9. Lift off the locking washer (D) and set it aside.

  10. Take off the inner burr (E) and the thin washer (F) under it.

  11. Lift out the lower grounds spindle (H).

  12. Clean the spindle, and clear coffee from inside the burr chamber and off the driveshaft.

  13. Finally take the four springs (I) out of the burr chamber.

    From the manual: “remove the 4 x springs I from the burr chamber.”

  14. Lower the grounds spindle onto the driveshaft, matching its flat side.

    From the manual: “lining up with the corresponding flat side on the driveshaft”

  15. Put the thin washer on top of the spindle.

    From the manual: “Then place a thin washer F on top of the grounds spindle.”

  16. Put the four springs back in the burr chamber.

    From the manual: “Replace the 4 x springs I back into the burr chamber”

  17. Fit the cleaned or new inner burr on the spindle and turn it until it catches the locking pin (G).

    From the manual: “rotate until it engages with the locking pin G on the grounds spindle.”

  18. Put the locking washer on the inner burr.

    From the manual: “Replace the locking washer D on top of the inner burr.”

  19. Thread the set nut onto the driveshaft and tighten it anticlockwise with the tool.

    From the manual: “use the tool to tighten - in an anti-clockwise direction.”

  20. Drop the cleaned or new outer burr back into the chamber.

    From the manual: “Replace the new or cleaned outer burr B back into the burr chamber.”

  21. Seat the ring bearing on the outer burr housing, inside its recess.

    From the manual: “ensuring this ring bearing fits inside the cavity before the next step.”

  22. Refit the adjustment collar and hopper, tightening the hopper to the 0 point.

    From the manual: “Replace the adjustment collar and hopper and tighten the hopper to the “0” point.”

  23. Dial in the grind setting you need.

    From the manual: “Dial in your required grind setting.”

  24. Put the lid back and reconnect the power.

    From the manual: “replace your lid and power supply and you are ready to grind.”
