Before you start
- Tools
- dry soft brush (a long one reaches the body), pipe cleaner, dry cloth
- Supplies
- None listed
Warnings
- Keep the burrs dry: no water on them, and on a daily-use mill only a dry brush. Source: Kinu M47 Classic user manual (care instructions)
- Hand-clean only: no dishwasher and never immerse the mill. Source: Kinu M47 Classic user manual (care instructions)
- Leave the outer ring burr in place; it is press-fitted and not meant to come out. Source: Prima Coffee: Product Maintenance — How to take apart a Kinu hand grinder (video transcript)
- Avoid canned air dusters, whose bittering agent can taint the coffee. Source: Prima Coffee: Product Maintenance — How to take apart a Kinu hand grinder (video transcript)
Steps
- Pull the grounds catch off the grinder.
From the manual: “So first, we're going to take off our grinds catch.”
- Unscrew the thumbscrew on top counter-clockwise and take it out.
From the manual: “just undo this thumbscrew at the very top”
- Lift off the handle together with the small nut under it and keep them as a pair.
From the manual: “We're going to take our handle off as well as this little nut”
- Hold the inner burr from underneath with a finger and unscrew the adjustment wheel counter-clockwise until it comes off.
From the manual: “put my finger on the bottom of the burr just to hold it in place”
- Draw the drive shaft and inner burr straight out through the bottom, keeping it square because the fit is tight.
From the manual: “we'll just pull straight out the bottom”
- Brush the ground coffee off the inner cone burr and off the outer ring burr with a dry brush.
From the manual: “I have access to wiping grinds off the burr here.”
- Clear the rest of the body with a long soft brush, a pipe cleaner or a little compressed air.
From the manual: “If you have a long sort of soft brush or a pipe cleaner”
- Push the drive shaft back up through the bearings, straight in.
From the manual: “reassemble by pushing the driveshaft up through our bearings straight in”
- Thread the adjustment wheel back on far enough to hold.
From the manual: “We'll put our adjustment wheel back on”
- Refit the small nut, lining up its D-shaped hole with the flat on the shaft.
From the manual: “When we go to put this little nut back on, it's actually asymmetrical.”
- Refit the handle, push the thumbscrew through and tighten it fully, then put the grounds catch back.
From the manual: “screw the thumbscrew all the way back on”
- Set the grind again, since the wheel setting was lost; Kinu suggests starting about one and a half turns open and adjusting to taste.
From the manual: “Start with an initial setting at one and one-half rotations, then adjust to taste from there.”
