Replace the E61 group gasket and shower screen: Quick Mill LUCCA X58 and ACS Vesuvius
Before you start
- Applies when
- E61 group, where the group gasket holds the shower screen in by tension (no centre screw)
- Tools
- flat-head screwdriver, Pallo (group) brush, towel or rag, portafilter with the basket removed
- Supplies
- E61 group gasket (sized for the machine (thickness varies)); E61 shower screen (when replacing the screen), optional; food-safe lubricant (e.g. Molykote 111) (thin film on the gasket); Biocaf cleaning powder (optional soak) (1 scoop in a glass of water, 15 minutes), optional
Warnings
- Do not scrub the screen with a hard-bristled brush; it upsets the water spread and causes channeling. Source: Clive Coffee Help Center: How to clean and backflush E61 group head machines
Steps
- Lever the shower screen and gasket out together with a flat-head screwdriver, using the rim of the group as the pivot.
From the manual: “you’ll need a flathead screwdriver to pry out the shower screen and gasket”
- Loosen the baked-on grounds inside the group with a warm, wet rag, scrub with a group brush, then wipe out what came loose.
From the manual: “we recommend a warm, wet rag and a Pallo brush”
- If the machine has a removable dispersion plate behind the screen, take it out and clean it too. Optional
From the manual: “Some machines have an internal dispersion plate that is removable”
- To clean the old screen instead of replacing it, soak it with the portafilter for 15 minutes in water with a scoop of Biocaf. Optional
From the manual: “Dropping your portafilter and shower screen into a glass of water with 1 scoop of Biocaf for 15 minutes”
- Use a new screen when it is due (the source suggests every one to two years). Only when: shower screen replacement
From the manual: “we recommend replacing the screen entirely on your machine”
- Coat the new gasket lightly with food-safe lubricant.
From the manual: “we recommend using a food-safe lubricant, such as Molykote 111, on the gasket”
- Put the screen and new gasket back the way they came out, easing the gasket up with the screwdriver.
From the manual: “Use a screwdriver to push the gasket back into place gently.”
- Lock in a portafilter with its basket taken out to push the gasket fully home.
From the manual: “remove the basket from your portafilter and use that to ensure the gasket is fully seated”
