Steps

  1. If the machine must not run meanwhile, close the upstream water valve and switch the machine off: with the handle open, water can bypass the cartridge. Optional

From the manual: “close water intake and switch off power supply to the terminal equipment”

  2. Swing the locking handle on the filter head open.

From the manual: “Open locking handle 2”

  3. Press the flush valve to let the pressure out of the system.

From the manual: “Activate the flush valve 8 and depressurise the system.”

  4. Lift the spent cartridge out of the head, minding its weight; tilting it 90 degrees in the wall bracket makes this easier.

From the manual: “Remove exhausted filter cartridge 6 from the filter head”

  5. Look at the head, hoses and seals while the cartridge is out; replace anything faulty and clean anything dirty.

From the manual: “examine all remaining parts carefully! Faulty parts must be replaced and contaminated parts should be cleaned!”

  6. Find your carbonate hardness (Quell ST) or total hardness (Finest) with the BRITA test kit, or ask your water supplier. Only when: at installation, or if your water has changed

From the manual: “Alternatively, your local water supplier will be able to provide information on the local water hardness.”

  7. For a Quell ST on the 0-70 % head, read the bypass and capacity in litres for that hardness off the coffee/espresso column of BRITA's table. Only when: Quell ST cartridges

From the manual: “Table of bypasses and capacities PURITY C Quell ST”

  8. Turn the bypass dial on the head to the value you looked up (it leaves the factory at 30 %). Only when: Quell ST on a 0-70 % variable head

From the manual: “Then turn the by-pass setting 11 to the identified value.”

  9. Pull up the tab on the new cartridge's protective cap and take the cap off.

From the manual: “Pull the flap of the protective cap 7 upwards and remove the protective cap.”

  10. Make sure both O-rings sit flush and tight.

From the manual: “Check O-rings 10 for correct fit (flush, tight).”

  11. Write the next change date in the date box on the cartridge label.

From the manual: “Note the next exchange date in the date field on the filter cartridge”

  12. With the handle still open, push the cartridge straight up into the head, held vertical.

From the manual: “Insert the filter cartridge 6 in the filter head 1 in a vertical position.”

  13. Turn the locking handle closed until it clicks into place.

From the manual: “Turn the locking handle 2 until you feel it engage.”

  14. Open the water supply again and switch the machine back on.

From the manual: “Open the water intake and switch on the terminal equipment’s power supply.”

  15. Hold a container under the flush hose to catch what comes out.

From the manual: “catch water emerging from the flush hose 9 in an appropriate container”

  16. Open the flush valve and run water off until it is clear and bubble-free, and at least twice the empty cartridge volume (C50 1 l, C150 1.9 l, C300 2.9 l). Repeat until the water runs clear and bubble-free

From the manual: “flush the filter system until the filtered water runs clear and without bubbles”

  17. Check every connection for leaks.

From the manual: “Check system for any leaks.”
