Steps

  1. Close the hopper's bean shut-off knob so 'CLOSED' faces up.

From the manual: “Ensure the bean shut-off knob (3) on the hopper (2) is in the closed position.”

  2. Run the grinder until the beans left in it are ground out.

From the manual: “use the START/STOP (7) button to run the grinder to expel any coffee that remains in the grinder.”

  3. Unplug the grinder.

From the manual: “Always unplug the grinder from the electrical supply before assembling, disassembling or cleaning.”

  4. Turn the hopper counterclockwise to unlock it and lift it off.

From the manual: “Grip the hopper and rotate it counterclockwise to unlock it.”

  5. Fit the supplied burr removal tool on the upper burr carrier so its notches catch the carrier wings.

From the manual: “Place the included burr removal tool (12) on the upper burr carrier”

  6. Turn the tool clockwise to unscrew the carrier; grip the tool with pliers if it will not move.

From the manual: “Rotate the burr removal tool clockwise to unscrew the upper burr carrier from the grind chamber.”

  7. Lift the upper burr carrier out once it is fully unscrewed.

From the manual: “Once the upper burr carrier is unscrewed completely, lift it up to remove it from the grinder.”

  8. Undo the screws holding the old upper burr in its carrier with a small flat-head screwdriver, and take the burr out.

From the manual: “use a small flat-head screwdriver to remove the screws holding the burr in the burr carrier.”

  9. Screw the new upper burr into the carrier without overtightening.

From the manual: “use the screwdriver to reinstall the screws and burr.”

  10. Undo the lower burr screws and lift the old lower burr out of its carrier.

From the manual: “Set the screws aside and lift the burr out of the burr carrier.”

  11. While it is out, brush the carrier top and the exit chute opening.

From the manual: “clean the top of the lower burr carrier, the back of the burr, and the opening of the coffee exit chute.”

  12. Screw the new lower burr in without overtightening.

From the manual: “use the screwdriver to reinstall the screws and burr.”

  13. Set the upper burr carrier on the grind chamber so it sits level.

From the manual: “It will not thread on properly if it is not level.”

  14. Thread it in counterclockwise with the tool; it should turn smoothly.

From the manual: “Use the burr removal tool to rotate the upper burr carrier counterclockwise to carefully thread it into the grind chamber.”

  15. If it binds, back it off clockwise, clear coffee from both threads, level it and try again. Optional

From the manual: “make sure it is level and that the threads on both the grind chamber and burr holder are free of ground coffee”

  16. Set the hopper on with the shut-off knob toward the back left, push down and turn clockwise to lock it.

From the manual: “Push down and rotate the hopper clockwise to center the shut-off knob and lock the hopper into place.”

  17. If the new burrs will not grind fine or coarse enough at the ends of the range, recalibrate using the manual's Burr Calibration steps. Optional

From the manual: “if the Vario+ is unable to grind finely enough or coarsely enough for a particular brew method”
