Replace the cone burr: Baratza Encore

Steps

  1. Unplug the grinder.

  2. Take the case off, following Baratza's separate case removal guide.

  3. Lift the safety interlock switch off its posts and let it hang clear.

  4. Undo the three screws that hold the gearbox and motor to the chassis.

  5. Lift the gearbox and motor out of the chassis.

  6. Unplug the motor cable from the circuit board.

  7. Undo the four screws that fix the motor plate to the gearbox.

  8. Remove the 13 mm gear nut; a 10 mm nut is reverse-threaded and loosens clockwise.

  9. Drive the shaft down out of the gearbox with a screwdriver handle, one hand underneath to catch the cone burr.

    From the manual: “A screwdriver handle generally works to hammer the shaft down and out of the gearbox.”

  10. Keep the washers from between the drive gear and gearbox housing together with the gear.

    From the manual: “Place these in a safe place with the drive gear.”

  11. Take off the paddle wheel and its washers and store them apart from the drive-gear washers.

    From the manual: “Keep them in a safe place separate from the drive gear/gearbox housing washers to avoid confusion.”

  12. Clamp the old cone burr in large pliers or a vise; wrap it in a rag if you will reuse it.

    From the manual: “hold the cone burr with large pliers, a bench vise, vise grips, etc.”

  13. Unscrew the reverse-threaded drive shaft from the burr with an 11/32 in or 9 mm box wrench.

    From the manual: “Use a 11/32” or 9mm box wrench to remove the reverse-thread driveshaft.”

  14. Screw the new cone burr onto the shaft by hand only (reverse thread).

    From the manual: “Thread the new burr on by hand (the burr is reverse-threaded).”

  15. Fit the paddle wheel with its two pegs engaged in the underside of the burr.

    From the manual: “Install the paddle wheel and index the two pegs into the bottom of the cone burr.”

  16. Refit the paddle wheel felt and its washers.

    From the manual: “Install the paddle wheel felt and washers.”

  17. Slide the burr, shaft, paddle wheel and washers back up through the gearbox.

    From the manual: “Slide the cone burr/ driveshaft/paddlewheel/ washers assembly through the gearbox.”

  18. Put the drive-gear washers back between the gear and the gearbox housing.

    From the manual: “Install the washers between the drive gear and gearbox housing.”

  19. Press the drive gear on until flush with the shaft hex, lip facing away from the burr.

    From the manual: “Press the drive gear into place until flush.”

  20. Fit the washer and nut, finger-tight only.

    From the manual: “Install the washer and nut. The nut should be finger-tight.”

  21. Reattach the motor and plate to the gearbox, tightening the screws in a cross pattern.

    From the manual: “Tighten screws in a X pattern.”

  22. Set the gearbox and motor back in the chassis and plug the motor cable into the board.

    From the manual: “Install the gearbox/ motor assembly back into the chassis.”

  23. Route the interlock cable under the right-hand chassis screw mount.

    From the manual: “Route the safety interlock cable under the right chassis screw mount as pictured.”

  24. Refit the three chassis screws.

    From the manual: “Secure the three chassis screws.”

  25. Seat the safety interlock switch back on its posts.

    From the manual: “Set the safety interlock switch onto its posts.”

  26. Refit the case.

    From the manual: “Reinstall the case to return the unit to operation.”
